Prescribed Burn Planned for Coconino County

Phoenix, AZ (5/6/19)  - Recent moisture and ideal weather conditions allow the Department of Forestry and Fire Management to burn off hundreds of acres of debris piles this week around the Flagstaff-area.

The Mill Park Rx Burn is a 510-acre debris pile burn aimed at reducing hazardous fuels from previous reduction projects to ensure the safety of the nearby communities.

The prescribed burn takes place 17 miles southwest of Flagstaff and roughly six miles from Kachina Village.

The project is weather dependent with ignitions expected to begin Tuesday, May 7th. It consists of burning three separate blocks over the course of two days.

DFFM works closely with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to limit the potential for smoke. However, smoke may affect the communities of Mountainaire and Flagstaff due to their proximity.

After all ignitions are complete, crews will monitor piles until no more smoke or heat is observed.

Pile burning is a good method to safely remove debris within a controlled environment and reduces the risk of wildfires and aids in the regeneration of vegetation.
