The Office of the State Fire Marshal, under the Department of Forestry and Fire Management, is responsible for inspecting 15,000 state and county-owned buildings. Each year, Deputy Fire Marshal's inspect nearly 3,200 buildings, including schools.
The duties of the Office of the State Fire Marshal serve to reduce hazards to life and property through enforcement of the Arizona Fire Codes. The office shall perform its duties by conducting inspections and fire investigations, by providing public education, and by adopting fire prevention codes.
***Effective January 31, 2017*** we will no longer be accepting Permit Applications for the Installation, Modification or Decommissioning of Underground Storage Tanks on behalf of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). All permits issued before this date will receive the necessary inspections by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Arizona State Agency Consolidation
As part of the fiscal year 2017 budget, the Office of the State Fire Marshal has been consolidated into the Department of Forestry and Fire Management. The consolidation aids in government efficiency, preserves critical functions, and has the potential for cost savings. All of the Fire Marshal’s previous powers and duties have been preserved and became part of the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management’s mission.
