Cause Determined for 2024's Rose Fire Near Wickenburg

Wickenburg, AZ (8/19/2024) – Wildland fire investigators determine railroad maintenance operations as the cause of the Rose Fire outside of Wickenburg. During the investigation, investigators found a section of cut railroad track from work conducted along the BNSF rail line. They determined that area to be the point of origin because of how the fire moved away from the tracks, upslope. Investigators concluded the fire started from sparks due to hot work, or use of a welder, grinder, or torch used to cut the rail line.

The Rose Fire started June 12, 2024, southwest of Wickenburg along the east side of the US 60. It burned 266 acres before it was called 100% contained on June 17. The fire destroyed multiple primary structures, outbuildings, and vehicles along with utility infrastructure. It also forced the closure of the highway in both directions outside of Wickenburg. Rose Fire suppression costs are currently estimated at $971,000.
