Arizona Forestry Supports More than a Dozen Fire Departments with Funding to Assist with Wildland Firefighting Needs
Phoenix, AZ (2/26/24) – The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) awards 15 statewide fire departments more than $150,000 in funding to support their critical needs for wildland firefighting. Through DFFM’s Rural Fire Capacity (RFC) grant program, DFFM approved 18 grants to help with necessities such as personal protection equipment (PPE), fire shelters, hand tools, communications equipment, and training needs.
Agencies awarded 2023/2024 RFC funding include:
- Beaver Dam Littlefield Fire District, Mohave County
- Bowie Fire District, Cochise County
- Concho Fire Department, Apache County
- Crown King Fire District, Yavapai County
- Duncan Valley Rural Fire District, Greenlee County
- Helmet Peak Fire Department, Pima County
- Joseph City Fire District, Navajo County
- Mormon Lake Fire District, Coconino County
- Portal Fire and Rescue, Cochise County
- Round Valley Fire and Medical Department, Gila County
- San Simon Fire District, Cochise County
- Sunnyside Fire District, Cochise County
- Walker Fire Department, Yavapai County
- City of Williams on behalf of the Williams Fire Department, Coconino County
- Vernon Fire District, Apache County
Recipients requested funding support for hand tools, saws and hoses, PPE, and communications equipment. The RFC program allows the state to help smaller agencies with critical purchases that often times their budgets do not allow for. In order to qualify for a RFC grant, eligible fire departments or districts must serve a community with a population of 10,000 or less. In addition, 80 percent of the department’s firefighting personnel must be classified as volunteer status.
