State Forestry Managing Multiple Lightning-Sparked Fires across the State

Phoenix, AZ (7/27/18) - With the summer storms, comes the lightning. And with the lightning, comes the fires. Today, firefighters with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management are working multiple lightning-sparked fires across the state.

BIRD FIRE: The Bird Fire, roughly four miles outside of Black Canyon City, was found by Air Attack yesterday afternoon. The 20-acre fire is burning through the Bradshaw Mountains, west of Interstate 17 and south of Maggie Mine Road.

The fire is caught up on the backside of the peak and is in monitor status. Crews will assess the fire by air. There are no values at risk, including no structures threatened.

WINCHESTER FIRE: The Winchester Fire in Southern Arizona is burning northwest of Wilcox, in the southeastern portion of the Winchester Mountains. The fire was discovered early Thursday morning by aircraft. The fire is roughly 150 acres and is being flown to get a more accurate size-up. The fire is burning in an area with little to no access.

Due to the limited access and dangerous terrain, the fire has been put in monitor status and will be used as a resource benefit fire. State Forestry will monitor the fire with the assistance of aircraft.

There are no threats to any structures.

BRUNO FIRE: Firefighters continue to make excellent progress on the Bruno Fire and now have it 60% contained. The fire is 4,444 acres and is no longer threatening any structures or the Beacon Hill Communications Site.

The fire, burning 15 miles northeast of Douglas, received a significant amount of rain Thursday night. Fire activity has slowed, however, smoke may still be visible to Douglas and nearby residences as the fire continues to smolder within the interior of the perimeter.
